Lots of reviews with similar names to this one say, "here's the info... you decide." Well I'm not going to do that... I'm going to name a winner, so don't touch that dial!
Basic Stamp:
Price: $119
Open Source: No
Awesome: eh...
Arduino:
Price: $32
Open Source: yes
Awesome: yes
Well I think that about sums it up ;)
PS - I don't really have anything against the Basic stamp... It was my first microcontroller. it's just that, well...
Go open source!

I don't have an Arduino but it is AVR based and so I have to conclude that I agree with you. :)
The BS2 was my first MCU too and it is great for many things but it has some serious limitations for robotics.
The Pololu Baby Orangutan lays waste to the BS2. Heck, maybe even the Arduino -- $25-30, BS2 sized, built in motor controllers (run in background), 8 channel ADC (reads voltage not resistance), capable of pseudo-multitasking.
I'm sure there are lots of microncontrollers with more impressive specs than the arduino, but what really makes it a pleasure to work on is the great community surrounding the platform.
There are projects and tutorials all over the internet for it, and forums where you get a response to nearly any problem within hours.
I'm sure I'll move on to a more powerful platform eventually though, or perhaps a more powerful arduino will be created.
C'est la vie (down the hatch)
Hi Robert, can the Arduino multitask? Especially when sending or receiving PWM (without using external chips), Basic Stamp has to wait for one cycle of the PWM to complete before it moves on to the next step; is Arduino the same?
Meaning to say, if i were to hook it up to a RC receiver and try to control your hexapod would the response be good enough to send it out to do some road crossing?
We have released DuinOS: a free full open source RTOS with preemptive multitasking for Arduino.
The alpha version can be donwloaded from:
http://robotgroup.com.ar/noticias/20091102/duinos-sistema-operativo-multitarea-para-arduino
It's based on the robust FreeRTOS kernel (www.freertos.org).

Juilán
yeah i starte with arduino lol:p but in my school i tested the basic stamp its suck its too slow the Atmega328(included in the arduino board )is 1000 faster
and the basic stamp is too expensive
if someone want to entry in the world of microcontroller is a arduino awesome
BASIC STAMP sucks its too expensive and its not so much worth as its costs!
